Teton Valley

StateLineRoadViewHere we are again in Tetonia, Idaho. With the additional towns of Driggs and Victor, the beautiful rolling hills and scenic wheat and potato farms, and the amazing views of the Teton mountains, this place has drawn us back for the third summer in a row.

So far, we’ve had really good burgers at The Brakeman American Grill, BrakemanBurgerFriesBigHoleBrisketoutstanding barbeque at Big Hole BBQ and good pizza at Wildlife Brewing. Did I mention there are two breweries in Victor? We really could live here.

WildlifeAmberAlesWildlife Brewing is a brew pub that does a great job with pizza and beer. On our first visit WildlifePizzawe stopped in just for the beer; Jackalope Amber Rye for Karen and Trophy Trout Stout for me. Later in the week, we came for dinner and we both had the amber to go along with Karen’s pizza and my stromboli.
GrandTetonBrewingAlesJust down the highway is Grand Teton Brewing Company. We sat on the front porch with a Teton Amber Ale for Karen and the Bitch Creek ESB for me, enjoying the mild weather and watching a couple of dogs chase a tennis ball. Not a bad way to relax.

It was on our way to try the barbeque at Big Hole in Victor that we passed this cupcake stand in Driggs. After thinking about it for maybe a half second, we turned right, CupcakeStandmade the block and picked out a couple of cupcakes that we would have for dessert. But since they only had a box that would hold six and since we wanted to help out two young entrepreneurs, we figured the best thing to do would be to pick out four more. You gotta support the local economy.

After work Thursday, and before the beer and pizza, we took a drive off the highway and outside Victor just to have a look at more of those farms and all the different views of the Tetons.WhiteBison2 We both did a double-take when we drove past what appeared to be a white buffalo in a small herd. After I found a place to turn around we went back to confirm our sighting. There were actually three white bison: a bull and a cow with her calf. Now that is a pretty rare sight!
Another rare sight occurred after the beer and pizza. We were heading home and decided at the last minute to turn east off the highway and drive toward the Tetons to see the varying views and homesites where we could imagine parking our motorhome or even building a house. Alta is another small town just across the border in Wyoming and we found the road to take us there to check it out. The main road is Ski Hill Road and it continues on up the mountain to the Grand Targhee Resort. Although the view of the mountains quickly disappeared we continued the climb up to the top just to see where it goes. Karen was relieved when we got there because she was able to find a restroom and then we started back down. We hadn’t gone very far when we made a curve and there was this little fellow standing on the side of the road. NoelFoundI might have thought it was a fox except for the dog tags I could see on her collar. I opened the car door and she came slowly walking up and let me pick her up and set her on Karen’s lap as I looked for a phone number on the tag. You could tell the poor thing was weary from an ordeal and her hair was full of twigs and leaves. Karen gave her some water as I called the number on the tag. A lady answered and I said, “Hi, did you lose your dog?”. There sure was one relieved owner on the other end of the phone and she told me where we could meet in town to return Noel to her family. NoelRescuedShe told us they had been out picking huckleberries and the dog got separated when the group they were with split up. But that was down here at the bottom of the mountain. We found her maybe two-thirds of the way up! She said they all looked for her for hours and she had prayed to God that she would make it to the road and someone would find her. Needless to say, Noel and her mama were quite happy to be reunited and we were happy to have participated in God’s answer to prayer.

Fort Collins

WellingtonKOAThere were a few choices of RV parks for the week we wanted to stay in Loveland/Fort Collins, or so we thought. We checked for one of the premium sites on the Big Thompson River at Riverview RV Park in Loveland where we’d stayed a couple of years ago but they were all booked. Well, how about the KOA in Fort Collins that we’d been to before; it is very convenient to town and huge. WellingtonKOAViewSurely they have a space for the week. Nope. The old standby, Loveland RV Resort? It’s always a squeeze to get into but we’re getting desparate. All filled up that week. Finally, after a couple of phone calls and mixed responses, we managed to secure four nights at the KOA in Wellington, north of Fort Collins (north of Wellington as well).

FCBTapsIt was convenient enough to Fort Collins to continue our brewery tourism after work on Monday and our first stop was the Fort Collins Brewery. It amazes me that they were able to keep their existence a secret from me for so long because when I asked how long they’ve been around I was told, “ten years”. FCBFlightsWow, have we been missing out! During our two visits here we had their very delicious Chocolate Stout, Red Banshee Red Ale and the Kidd Black Lager. FCBAlesI tried the black lager on the recommendation from one of the brewers who was in the tap room after his work day. He said it was his favorite and it would soon be gone. We like this brewery so well that we even bought a six-pack each of the chocolate stout and black lager to take home.

OdellLineUpJust a couple of blocks down the street is Odell Brewing Company. We knew it existed because we’ve had some of their beers before but this was our first visit to the brewery. OdellBrewingAlesAfter a couple of tastes Karen had the 90 Shilling Amber Ale and I chose the Cutthroat Porter. I’ve had it before and I’ve had it on draft before, but it always seems better fresh from the factory.

PaterosCreekPorter2The next day we chose a couple of breweries in Old Town Fort Collins. The first was Pateros Creek Brewing Company. The name is interesting because there isn’t a Pateros Creek. However, local historians claim that was the original name of the Cache la Poudre River that runs through Fort Collins today. So, it made sense to us to have a pint of their Cache la Poudre Porter, although it made even more sense because that’s the one we both liked the taste of best. EnziosPizza2After the brew we walked two blocks over to the restaurant, Enzio’s Italian Kitchen, who advertises $5 pizzas during their happy hour. EquinoxBeersThe thin crust and appetizer size was just what we needed for a snack before the next brewery, Equinox Brewing, which again was just a short walk away. They had quite a selection of beers that I would have liked to sample but their flights were fixed to only specific ones so I went with their Red Dwarf Amber Ale and Karen chose the Eclipse Brown. The place seemed kinda laid back and quiet when we first arrived but got progressively busier and louder as our beers diminished. Once they were gone, so were we.

BlackBottleAleSo many breweries, so little time. Really. There were two more that I wanted to try and we had another day to get it done. First stop, Black Bottle Brewing. I had seen their website and they had a great selection of guest beers as well as their own. The one of theirs that had my attention was named Anarchy Porter – Hold the Government. Karen stuck with the sample size and although mine was only a 10-oz. serving, it was enough but quite good. ChipsSalsaEating between breweries worked out pretty good for us yesterday and the craving for chips and salsa led us to Las Tarascos, a Fort Collins Mexican restaurant with great reviews on Yelp and TripAdvisor. They have a self-service salsa bar with a dozen salsas but we narrowed down the best roasted red salsa pretty quick and really, really enjoyed the house-made tortilla chips and corn tortillas. After the enchilada dinners, it was time to head down to Loveland and on the way to Grimm Brothers Brewhouse we got to drive by my parents’ house. The new owners have done a great job keeping it up. It looks great. GrimmBrothersAlesGrimm’s most interesting beer was called Willow’s Wren Erntebier. I’ve never heard of an erntebier but it was a very dark, light-bodied German style ale and it was really pretty good. We both had one before heading back to Jake and Peggy up there in Wellington.

60+ VW Buses

ManyBaysWhen we found out there was going to be a VW show in Evergreen on the Sunday we were planning to leave Golden and head up to Fort Collins, we extended our stay at the Dakota Ridge RV park one more day. The day came and we drove the 15 miles to Evergreen and followed the “VW Show” signs to Evergreen Lake. There was only remote parking available and we shared the shuttle with a couple and their two young girls. Both Karen and I had our cameras with batteries fully charged and anticipated many buses. TexasVWClassicWe were not disappointed. Karen was wearing her Texas VW Classic t-shirt from the Fredericksburg show we had our bus in back in April and the lady at the first bus in this show noticed it and told us that they had their bus in Fredericksburg, too. ManyBusesThere were a lot of VWs of all sorts but I was mainly interested in the buses, of course, and I think I got a picture of every one of them: 27 bay windows and 34 split windows. I don’t count the Vanagons – they’re vans, not buses. After about an hour of photographing and admiring the classic VWs, many of which had been meticulously restored, the clouds began to gather and we figured it was time to catch the shuttle back to the car. Coincidentally, we lined up for the shuttle right behind the same family we shared the ride with to the show. TommyknockersTapsIdaho Springs was only another 15 miles away and we knew there was a brew pub there because we had one of their beers at a restaurant in Golden last week. TommyknockersIt made sense to us to go try out Tommyknocker Brewery & Pub for lunch. After tasting a couple of samples Karen chose the Maple Nut Brown and I had their Butt Head Bock. The beers were very good but the brat I had and the burger Karen had were nothing to get excited about. ArvadaPorterAfter going back home to let the dogs out we decided we could handle another beer or two so we drove over to Arvada Beer Company in Arvada. In spite of a big crowd and closed off street for some blues and bbq benefit event, we ArvadaTapsfound a decent parking space and walked a couple of blocks to the brewery. Their Pool Hall Porter was a little weak in body but tasted okay. One was plenty so we drove on to a new brewery in Arvada, Odyssey Beerwerks. I asked the fellow behind the bar how long they’d been around and he told us, “seven weeks”. OdysseySamplesThe sample tastes we had of four of their contenders did not make the choice easy – they were all quite good. OdysseyBeersKaren ended up with the Psycho Penguin Vanilla Porter and I went with the Nebula Belgian Black Double IPA. I also had a Kalua pork wrap from the food truck out front. I would have preferred it on a bun but it was wrapped in a crepe and was very tasty. Karen was considering it but then another patron at the bar mentioned that he had just come from Cannonball Creek Brewery in Golden and the Texorado food truck was there. So back we went to Golden and the opportunity for not only good brisket for a third time, but also the chance that we might get to actually try Cannonball’s Brickyard Porter (we got two of their stouts last time, remember?). Karen also got the CannonballCreek2opportunity to tell the Texorado guy how his brisket would be better if he trimmed more fat off of it. He told her that she would like the brisket he had today as it was much leaner. It sure did look good as he sliced it for her sandwich, so I ordered one, too. Unfortunately, it was as dry and tough as it was lean but the porter was excellent and that made the effort worthwhile.

Around and About

Golden

EmpanadaArepasDuring lunch on Friday there were a few errands to be run at the bank, gas station and grocery store. This provided the opportunity to try out the Empanada Grill, a Venezuelan eatery in Golden. GranRoqueIt’s a tiny place, specializing in empanadas and arepas so the best thing to do was get both. The walls were decorated with black and white photos from around Venezuela and I immediately recognized GranRoqueMaalahione of the pictures as being an aerial shot of Gran Roque island, a small island off the coast of Venezuela that Claudia and I had visited aboard Ma’alahi so many years ago (got stuck at waiting for diesel fuel, actually). TableMountainCantinaGrillLater that afternoon we had a visit from another family member when my brother, Mark, was passing through after delivering horse trailers in Loveland and Nebraska. He had a lot of driving left to do before getting back home but he was able to stay long enough for us to enjoy another fine meal at Table Mountain Cantina & Grill.

Boulder

We started the next day with a quick visit to the Golden farmers market in search of cage-free, organic eggs. None were found so we headed to the Boulder farmers market since we had seen them there on the previous Saturday. Since we had most of the day still to go we figured we could get a few more breweries checked off our list. WestFlandersAlesWe started with West Flanders Brewing. I had a 10-oz. serving of their Angry Monk, a Trappist-style Belgian ale that was a bit unique among most Belgian-style ales. It was quite good. BRUBrownAlesThey were out of their Lion Heart Stout that Karen was hoping to find so she ordered up the Ska Brewing Buster Nut Brown Ale from their guest tap instead. BRUPizzaOvenOur next stop was at BRU handbuilt ales where we both had the Obitus American Brown Ale. This beer had a fuller body (good) and higher alcohol (not so good) than normal for a brown ale and we both thought it was very good. Now this might be hard to believe but they had this great pizza oven going behind us and … we didn’t get a pizza! I don’t remember for sure but the reason may have been that we were holding out for more barbeque from that food truck that we knew would be in Golden that evening.
FateCoffeeKolschAs fate would have it, our next stop was just down the street at Fate Brewing Company. They had a long list of their own beers FateKolschGoneas well as guest beers on their menu and after a couple of sample tastes we both zeroed in on the Fate Coffee Kolsch, a most unique and delicious beer. The Kölsch style is generally light and crisp without the bitterness and roasty flavors that we enjoy in coffee porters and stouts but the distinct coffee flavor paired quite well and we were both sad when it was too soon gone.

Golden

GoldenCityHappyDavidGoldenCityHappyKarenWell, it was time to get happy again so we drove back to Golden to the Golden City Brewery where we knew we’d find our favorite Colorado food truck, Texorado. Before barbeque, though, we managed to procure two Mad Molly’s Brown Ales. We ordered up a couple of brisket sandwiches and just as I got back to our table with them it started to rain. TexoradoTruckBeerInCarWe grabbed up our beers and sandwiches and ran to the car, parked on the street out front and from its dry comfort we watched the flooding rain and finished our beers and too-much-fat-in-the brisket-for-Karen sandwiches.

Denver

We just had to make up for that lousy pizza the other night and Karen came up with a good one in downtown Denver, Marco’s Coal-fired Pizza.MarcosPizzaOvens When we saw the twin pizza ovens we were pretty sure this was going to be good. We ordered an Odell 90 Shilling ale and two Margherita pizzas with pepperoni and bufala mozzarella added. The taste was very good but the crust should have been more well-done. No problem, just a small critique. We were both about half finished with our pizzas when the owner came over and asked how we liked it. MarcosPizzasKaren told her how much we liked them but showed her how the crust was good on the bottom but still gummy on top. Well, she immediately offered to remake them but we said no, it wasn’t a complaint; just something that could be improved. However, just as we were each down to our last piece the owner came back with two whole new pizzas. So they boxed them up for us and we took them home. But, not before we walked two blocks over to Great Divide Brewing.GreatDivideTaps GreatDivideYetiEspressoStoutThey have quite a few brews and three of them stouts, although all three were their Yeti which is a high-alcohol imperial stout: regular, chocolate and espresso. Karen got a taster of the regular and I ordered the espresso stout. It was very good but strong. Luckily, it came it a 10 ounce glass that we shared.

ProstTapsNot far away was Prost Brewing, a Denver brewery that specializes in German-style beers. According to their website, the brewery (I assume they mean the brewing equipment) ProstBrewsactually came from a brewery in Bavaria. After tastes of their Altbier and Altfränkisches Dunkel Bier, I ordered the Altbier (old style beer) and Karen chose the dunkel (dark). We were both happy with our choices and I was only a little disappointed when mine was served in a 25cl glass (it’s traditional, they say) but after the imperial stout earlier this was just fine.

When we first arrived in the area and while searching the internet for local breweries I came across the barbeque food truck, Texorado. Doing an internet search for them I found their website, Facebook page and Twitter page but in all cases the most up-to-date information just told where they had been, never where they were going to be. BSBSignFinally, on Friday, their Facebook page listed where they would be for the next few days and that very evening they would be at Black Shirt Brewing Co. in Denver. Since that brewery was already on our list, the decision to go there this evening was an easy one. BSB was the most unique brewery we’ve seen yet. BSBGlassesAll of their beers are BSBFlightdifferent styles of red ales and it seemed to me the best thing to do would be sample most of them. So, we got a flight of their Red Bitter, Red Ale, Red Saison, Pale Red Rye and Red Porter. TexoradoBrisketThey were all different and quite good, making it a bit difficult to choose. Another thing unique at BSB is the glasses they serve their beer in. The rim is slanted and you drink from the low end in order to enhance the aroma. TexoradoSandwishesAfter both of us selecting the red ale to start, for round two Karen chose the porter and I went with the rye. But not before ordering up two brisket sandwich plates from mister Texorado. Oh my, that was good brisket and paired quite nicely with our red ales! Along with the good beer and barbeque, we enjoyed our conversation with Randy and Trice from Colorado Springs. Randy runs the All Colorado Beer Festival in Colorado Springs each fall which is a non-profit 501(c)(3) and all their proceeds go to local charities.

Yet More Ales and Eats

Boulder

WalnutRedAltMilkStoutWalnutCeasarSaladOn July 4th we went to downtown Boulder and found the Walnut Brewery and Restaurant. They had some pretty good food and a few beers that looked good. Karen had a grilled chicken WalnutHickoryBurgerCeasar salad and the Devil’s Thumb Stout on nitro. I liked my Hickory Bacon BBQ burger and the St. James Irish Red Ale. We were off to a good start, although some of the breweries on our list were closed for the holiday.

Our next stop was Avery Brewing. The place was packed but just as we got to AveryTapsthe head of the line to order, a couple of bar stools became available and we grabbed them.AveryStouts Shortly after we got seated, a worker hollered out over the loud din that anyone wanting to go on the brewery tour should line up outside. That really cleared the place out and quieted it down allowing us to enjoy Karen’s 3 Point 7 Milk Stout and my Out of Bounds Stout.

FarmersMarketA couple of days later we headed back to Boulder to take a couple more breweries off our list. Our first stop, though, was the Boulder County Farmers Market. There was plenty of organicFarmersMarket2 vegetables, fresh eggs, meats, breads, flowers and even potted hops plants (you know, what they use to make beer). The biggest crowds were at the food court – pizza, barbeque, tamales, burgers and a lot more.
BoulderBeerTapsBoulder Beer Company was one that had been closed on the 4th and after a short visit at the farmers market we headed on over. Our best option there turned out to be their Planet Porter which was just okay – not bad, but nothing special. It was a little disappointing for “Colorado’s first microbrewery”.

From there we ventured over to a brewery that is as small as it is new, Wild Woods Brewery.WildWoodsBrewery Anything lacking in production volume was made up for with a very good beer. WildWoodsTapsWe had the Ponderosa Porter and enjoyed our conversation with David Foley, a local professional artist who is originally from Louisiana.

Golden

ElCallejonOn the day between visits to Boulder we kept it real local and after work on ElCallejonPupusasFriday headed over to the small Latin food restaurant, El Callejon, in downtown Golden for a snack of their Salvadoran specialty, pupusas. They were pretty good but it was only a snack so we knew we’d be eating again but we also knew we needed something on our stomachs before our intended stop at Cannonball Creek Brewing. This brewery is so new that it didn’t even show up on my Google maps app so we missed it on our first night in Golden. I ordered their Soul Doubt Stout and CannonballCreekKaren asked for a taste of the Brickyard Porter. There must have been some confusion because her taster of the porter looked and SoulDoubtStoutstasted exactly like my stout and unfortunately, the stout had almost no taste. It looked good, the body was right, the bitterness was there, but there was zero flavor. Too bad we didn’t actually get a taste of the porter – it might have been really good.

Well, as disappointing as that was, things were about to get worse. We had MannieAndBosPizzaseen Mannie & Bo’s Pizzeria online and it was highly rated on Yelp and even claimed to be “voted best pizza in Denver”. What a load of bull! It was the absolute worst crust ever. I swear I have had better frozen pizza.

ChocCoffeePorterWell, they can’t all be winners and tonight certainly proved that. So that we could end the evening on a positive note, we went home and cracked open the first bottle of my own Seven Oaks Brewing Chocolate Coffee Porter. It was actually quite good – the best of the four batches that I’ve brewed so far. And it’s still pretty young so it’s liable to get better with continued bottle conditioning.

Breweries, Brew Pubs and Restaurants

HopsLogoThe number of breweries and brew pubs in Colorado is staggering and although time won’t allow us to try them all we’ve signed up at our RV park here in Golden for another week and will do our best. This post will be mostly pictoral, HopsHappyHoursaving commentary for those places that really stand out for us.
The Hops Grill & Brewery in Lakewood has a good happy hour and great chips & salsa.

TableMountainGrillTableMountainGrillEnchiladas The Table Mountain Grill & Cantina is our favorite restaurant in Golden so far. Karen had chicken enchiladas and I had the mahi mahi TableMountainGrillFishTacosfish tacos and a Tommyknocker Brewery (Idaho Springs) Black Powder Oatmeal Stout – very good!

MountainSunPub
MountainSunJavaPorter
In Boulder, we found a wonderful brew pub, Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery. MountainSunBurgerThey have an extensive beer list, including their Java Porter which was outstanding, and the best burger and fries we’ve had in a very long time.

TwistedPineBrewingTwistedPineFlight Our next stop was the Twisted Pine Brewing Company where we enjoyed their Big Shot Espresso Stout and even took a bottle home with us.

DenverBeerCoTaps I got off work early on Wednesday and we had an hour before we were to meet up with Debbie, a high school friend of Karen’s from back in Munich. DenverBeerPorterWe took this opportunity to try out the Denver Beer Co. in downtown Denver. We had their Graham Cracker Porter which I found a little too sweet for a beer. If it was any sweeter it might have made a good root beer.

DebbieKaren
StrangePorter We met Debbie for a pint at Strange Brewing Company which was close by. Karen and I had the Paint it Black Honey Coffee Stout , which was okay, but nothing special. StrangeBrewMaster
After awhile, the brewery owners had a seat at the other end of our table for a “meeting” and thanked us for enjoying their beer. Once the beer was gone the three of us had a good Mexican dinner at one of Debbie’s favorite restaurants nearby.

Golden

It was only by chance, or more accurately, Providence, that we found out that Karen’s niece’s husband, Chris, would be in Golden on the same day we arrived. He has been on the road for several weeks with the group HaYovel participating in the Zion’s Sake conferences. The conference was just wrapping up when we hit town and they would be leaving the next morning but Chris was free for the rest of the afternoon and evening and joined us on our quest for pizza and beer. ChrisWoody'sPizzaHe hadn’t had much to eat all day so our first stop was WoodysWoodfiredPizzaWe ate here a couple of years ago but don’t remember the inside being so dark and dingy. Luckily, though, we got seated outside at a table just big enough for two large pizzas – well, almost big enough. The pizza was good enough and Chris got to take the other half of his with him. Sure hope he doesn’t have to share it with anybody.

GoldenCityBreweryOther than the obvious one, there are three breweries in Golden but one of them is apparently so new that it didn’t come up on my Google maps app so we went to the ones we could easily find. The first one was Golden City Brewery, “the second largest brewery in Golden”, or so they say. On their lineup was one called Lookout Stout but they didn’t have it available due to lack of keg space or something. So, we all had their Legendary Red Ale instead and we all agreed it was quite good. We may get a chance to go back later while we’re still in the area in hopes that they’ve found space for that stout.

Just a few blocks away we found Mountain Toad Brewing. After sampling a couple of contenders, Karen chose ChrisKarenMountainToadthe Apex Amber which is medium bodied and more malty than hoppy – just the right combination. Chris and I both went with the Ryrish Stout which is an Irish stout made with rye. Full-bodied, roasty with a little spice, it went down smooth. I hope to have another while we’re here. But Karen’s amber ale was pretty darn good, too, so Chris and I both had one of those as well.

Before heading back to the RV to continue our visit we drove up GoldenColoradoLookout Mountain for the incredible views of Golden on one side and the foothills on the other. The time went by much too quickly but it was good to see Chris and get to hear more about his experiences bringing in the grape harvests in Israel.LookoutMountainFoothills

Breckenridge, Dillon, Frisco, Georgetown

PubNachosSo, Friday after work we hit the Breckenridge Brew Pub. We were about 15 minutes early for their happy hour so we ordered food and asked for the beer to be brought when happy hour started. Hey, two dollars saved is two dollars earned, right? My nachos and Karen’s pulled pork sandwich arrived at our outdoor seating table and it wasn’t long before her Vanilla Porter and my Avalanche Amber showed up as well. PubPulledPorkThe food was just okay and the beer was just okay but we enjoyed getting to sit outside at the end of June. BreckBrewPubThere was another brew pub not far away in Dillon so we thought it would be a good idea to give them a chance, too, so off we went. It was happy hour at Pug Ryan’s Brewing Company, we got to sit outside and pints were only $2.50. I had their Deadeye Dunkel, Karen had the Outlaw Stout. PugRyansBrewThey say the stout is made with “an elixir of Jim Beam, Frangelico, Meyers rum and vanilla”. These flavors were very subtle and suited the stout quite well. Although the dunkel was lighter in color than one would expect, it was a beautiful mahogany, very malty with only a hint of hops. We both thought it was worth the drive over to Dillon and on the way back we drove through a couple of campgrounds in the White River National Forest on Dillon Reservoir that we wouldn’t mind spending some time at someday. PugRyansCopperKettles

The next morning we drove to Frisco and had breakfast at the Butterhorn Bakery & Cafe and once again enjoyed sitting outside.Butterhorn I was too anxious to dig in to my egg, cheese and bacon sandwich on croissant with a side of patty sausage, and forgot to snap any pictures of it or Karen’s whole grain French toast with a side of bacon. Mine was delicious but Karen would have enjoyed hers more if it had been warmer. The waitress offered to have it rewarmed but Karen didn’t want to have to wait any longer for it so we took advantage of her offer to choose a couple of cookies from the bakery to make up for it instead.

HistoricGeorgetownAfter breakfast we drove east on I-70, across the continental divide and through the Eisenhower Tunnel to Central City. This used to be a charming old mining town but casino gambling was introduced back in the 1990s and the place has lost all that charm, although many of the historic buildings remain. GeorgetownMainStWe drove around a bit but didn’t stay long and instead exited the interstate on the return trip at Georgetown. Now Georgetown was interesting in that there were no VW buses, brew pubs or wood-fired brick oven pizzas to be found but what we did find was plenty of historic charm. After driving up and down nearly every street we made our way back to Main Street and walked both sides of the historical district. The lady behind the counter at the old grocery/sundries store told us that the store and building once belonged to her great-grandfather. OldStoreOldStoreTodayAlthough stocked with modern goods, much of the display shelves and the creaking wooden floor are original to the building. We did make one attempt for a beer at the Lucha Cantina but it was too warm inside the airless building, the table was dirty and the beer list wasn’t that interesting. So we left, knowing there was a brewery in Frisco and a pizzeria in Breckenridge.

FlightDraughThe Backcountry Brewery had enough different good-sounding beers on tap that I opted for a flight, which consisted of all five of their year-round offerings plus my choice of two of their seasonals.BackCountryFlight I almost never order that sort of thing because I know I’m not really going to be crazy about at least half of them (in this case the wheat, pilsner and IPA) but the other half were that intriguing (amber, porter, maibock and imperial stout). They were all pretty good, especially the intriguing half. Karen had a pint of the amber and thought it was the best of them all.

GiampietroPizzaOur last stop of the day would be back in Breckenridge at Giampietro Pasta & Pizzeria. It’s a tiny place and there was a line to get in but being a party of two we got seated at a small table straight away. While I was gone trying to find a place to deposit my used beer, Karen ordered our pizza. Knowing that the thin crust that we like isn’t what they normally do, she asked them to make ours using less dough and that’s apparently what they did because the crust came out nice and thin and crisp and delicious.

Vail (food) and Edwards (beer)

I’m sure that Vail is a different place altogether during ski season but not being much interested in winter weather I’m not too anxious to find out. Our three visits to this major ski resort town have all been in the early summer and we enjoy the mild weather, the beautiful flowers and the Bavarian look and feel. PepisOne of our favorite aspects of the Bavarian look and feel is the German restaurant with the unlikely name, Pepi’s Restaurant and Bar. After checking out a few shops and sharing a pint of 1554 at an outdoor table of an establishment whose name I failed to pay attention to, we decided it was time to head over to Pepi’s. Well, our timing was off and their dinner service would not start until 5:30 and it was currently just a little before 4. Instead of disappointment, I saw this as a great opportunity to go check out the brewery I had seen online just 15 miles west in the town of Edwards. I called to make sure their taproom was open, plugged them into our GPS and headed to Edwards, Colorado.

CrazyMountainGrainSiloWe missed it on the first pass but then on the second attempt we saw the sign for Crazy Mountain Brewery. CrazyMountainTapsTheir taproom is reminiscent of some of the small breweries we visited in Portland which was a good omen. If it had been available I would have tried their Cara De Luna Black Ale but since it was still conditioning I opted for the Boohai Red Ale. CrazyMountainRedAleNot being a hop-head, the hop flavor was near the higher end of the range that I find enjoyable but it was within those limits and enjoy it I did.

I asked if I could take some pictures of the brewery and that led to a quick tour.

The blurb I had read online about Crazy Mountain said they would be acquiring the brewery in Denver that will be available when Breckenridge Brewery moves into it’s new facility so it looks like they’ll be expanding big time soon.

According to my iPhone there was another brewery in town and since there was a chocolate stout on their brew list we decided we could drive the half mile to the Gore Range Brewery. GoreRangeBreweryDue to parking lot construction we found the rear entrance and made our way to the bar. GoreRangeTasterSure enough, there was a chocolate stout on the menu and that’s what I ordered. Karen, being a little more discriminating, asked for a sample first and upon sampling, she ordered one, too. GoreRangeChocolateStoutIt is a black beer with a frothy head and a definite chocolate taste. The body is a little thin but it was very good and well worth the half mile drive – hey, even the 15 miles drive!

We returned to Vail, got parked and made our way to the restaurant. It was just past 5:30 – great timing! We’ve eaten here before so we knew it should be good. Karen is always on the lookout for good Wiener Schnitzel and is often disappointed but at Pepi’s they actual make theirs with veal (like they’re supposed to) WeinerSchnitzleinstead of pork (like most PC-conscious restaurants do) and it has been very good before. Me, being Texan, prefer my chicken fried steak with cream gravy and I usually order bratwurst but since it wasn’t on the menu this evening I had the Wiener Schnitzel, too.

We had a little bit of excitement on the way home. Just as we had pulled into Vail to park the low fuel light came on. That didn’t really alarm me because in my mind we still plenty of fuel to get to a station. ConocoReceiptThat erroneous thinking was because I’m used to my truck that still has a 50 mile range when the warning appears. As we were leaving Vail I tapped the info button to see that we had a cruising range of – 13 miles! I watched it go down quickly as we climbed up Vail Pass. I was hopeful that if we made it to the top we’d be able to at least coast down to the Copper Mountain exit where surely there was a gas station. Prayers were answered when we made that exit and drove into the Conoco with less than 2 miles to spare! I’ve never paid that much per gallon for gasoline in the United States before but I would have gladly paid twice that at the time.
