Franklin Barbecue

FranklinBarbecue
The previous day’s rain had passed and although we got what we thought was an early start, it was about 10:30 before we arrived to join the line at Franklin Barbecue in Austin. The place doesn’t open until eleven and since the line starts forming around nine, you are usually guaranteed a wait of a couple of hours. FranklinsLine1FranklinsLine2But if you show up too late, chances are they will have sold out for the day. We were early enough to avoid that but with our place in line it was not certain that they would still have ribs since those sell out first. FranklinsSmokerThis day we came prepared with our folding chairs in the back of the car but you could also rent a chair for five bucks from the entrepreneur across the street. FranklinsFrontDoorI’m not sure if the smell of barbeque the whole time was a good thing or a bad thing but the time went by fairly quick, between the people watching and being kept busy with a downed server at work and the flurry of emails that generated. We eventually reached the front door and we knew that once inside the wait would only be another 30 minutes. It was 12:45 when we made it to the head of the line and ordered our two pounds of brisket and three ribs – yes! they still had some. Is it worth a two hour and fifteen minute wait for the world’s best barbeque? Well, today it was but more often than not, I think we’d opt for second best without the wait.

The Salt Lick

We woke to a cold rain Wednesday morning and that managed to persuade us that this day would not be the day to go stand outside in a two-hour waiting line for Franklin Barbecue in Austin as we had planned. No, but there were other options – options that would use the change in weather to our advantage. We waited for the rain to pass then, dressed in our warmest clothes (which wasn’t much since we hadn’t considered the possibility of 50-degree weather), we drove out to Driftwood and The Salt Lick, one of our other very favorite Texas barbeque restaurants. The combination of the weather and late-afternoon time-of-day had the normally packed parking lotInsideSaltLickSaltLickBBQPit nearly empty so we were certain there would be no two-hour wait here today. Inside was just as empty as the parking lot but there was plenty of meat smoking over the open pit and that made it easy to decide on the all-you-can-eat family-style option. SaltLickBBQPlateThe first round of brisket (both lean and moist), ribs, sausage and burnt ends arrived soon and we quickly forgot about Franklin’s. The waitress would bring a plate loaded with meat like this three times before we hit the wall and said, “that’s enough!”. It’s a good thing that they let you take home what you don’t finish there. “A very good thing“, says Jake and Peggy.

Our favorite hill country brewery was not too many miles away so our next stop would be Middleton Brewing over in Wimberley. MiddletonESBDennis Middleton’s vast home brewing experience led him and his wife to start this brewery and tap room a couple of years ago and the effort he puts into every brew is evident in the quality that we’ve tasted in every one of his beers. MiddletonBelgianAmberToday we both had a pint of the British ESB (extra special bitter) and I followed that up with the Garnet Belgian Amber. After tasting the Pepperhead, an ale made with Jalepenos (no heat but a wonderful taste), I was tempted to have a pint but we had miles to drive to get home so I’ll look forward to that pint on our next visit. We also had a sample taste of their Pumpkinhead. Neither of us normally care for fruit or Tasterother flavored beers and we were told that Dennis doesn’t either. But this one had a very good spicy flavor and, again, you can actually taste the quality. On our last visit here back in April, Dennis told us that they were losing their lease on this space and he was probably going to just close it down as he was ready to retire. As disappointing as that news was I could certainly understand it. However, tonight we learned that they have bought a new place just a couple of miles down the road and will soon be expanding. That is great news for them, us and Central Texas!

Johnson City

We’re on a quick trip to the Texas Hill Country, taking advantage of a few days off work and needing to be in Austin on Saturday for my step-brother’s wedding. There are a couple of RV parks just outside of Dripping Springs but they were both full so we ended up a few more miles away at Miller Creek RV Park near Johnson City. PecanStreetPorterRedThis is actually a good thing because it puts us real close to a great little brew pub in town, Pecan Street Brewing. We have been there a few times since we discovered it a couple of years ago. Their beers have always been exceptionally good and our favorite is probably the No! You’re Out of Order Porter. This night, though, I started with the Road Devil Red Ale which I thought was excellent – just the right amount of hops for a red ale. For round two, we both had the porter. This just might be the perfect porter! Pecan Street is also a restaurant and they have a real nice brick pizza oven. On our first couple of visits, back when, we thought the pizza was outstanding with a thin, crispy crust and just the right amount of toppings. The last few times, though, have been quite disappointing. Either the crust was too thick and chewy or it was overloaded with cheese or both. ChickenFriedSteakPecanStreetPizzaKaren was willing to give the pizza one more try but I had already determined that the first good ones were just a fluke. Turns out I was right about that and I enjoyed my chicken fried steak a lot more than Karen liked her thin-crust-but-overloaded-with-sauce-and-cheese pizza.

Tex-Mex

There’s no place like home and there’s no place like Houston for great Tex-Mex. In the week that we’ve been back home we’ve eaten out six times – one Italian and five Mexican. PappasitosChipsPappasitosNachosPappasito’s Cantina got the nod twice but they have the advantage of being very close to home. It doesn’t hurt that their chips & salsa, beef fajita nachos and fish tacos are hard to beat! A recent write-up in the Houston Chronicle mentioned that Ninfa’s on Navigation was once again voted the best Mexican restaurant in Houston so we decided to go there for a partial family get-together with Jim & Becky and Lisa, Brian, Koen & Karsyn. NinfasEnchiladasUnfortunately, Koen had a fever and stayed home from school that day so we rescheduled with Lisa and family, but the remaining four of us carried on and enjoyed a fabulous Tex-Mex dinner on the other side of the planet. Well it can seem like it, being on the other side of Houston. Thank goodness for HOV lanes!

And now for brewery news. As mentioned in a previous post, we found out that on Fridays No Label Brewing in Katy actually sells beer at their “tap room” (the term is used loosely but they do have their beers tapped in the warehouse).NoLabelBlackAmber We had hoped to meet Lisa & Brian here since they live in Katy but Koen had soccer practice that he was committed to. However, we did get to meet friends Michael & Sharon there, who also live in Katy. After a couple of tastes, Karen liked the Ridgeback amber ale best and I chose the Black Wit-O, a dark wheat ale. Later, we both had the Elda M. milk stout, very creamy and smooth. It’s good to have a somewhat-local brewery to get to visit and with cooler weather coming soon we hope to get to enjoy it often.

After a couple of beers it was time to eat and the consensus was Los Cucos Mexican Cafe just across the interstate at Katy Mills mall. This is a local chain and our favorite Tex-Mex restaurant, although a different location than where we are regulars. Shortly after our arrival I got a text from Lisa asking where we had gone for dinner and they hoped to catch us next time. KoenKarsynSurpriseThat turned out to be just a ploy to find out where we were so the kids could surprise us with a quick visit since we were so close. And what a great surprise it was! It was very special to find out later how excited Koen & Karsyn were to get to surprise us like that. The rest of the evening was spent enjoying the chips & salsa, fajitas and enchiladas and having to listen to the Mariachis play Happy Birthday three times in a row for different parties at our surrounding tables. LosCucosMoleEnchiladasKnowing that time was short before our commitment to healthy eating at home had to begin, the next day we went to our Los Cucos in Pearland to see our favorite waiter, José, and to indulge in the chips & salsa one last time (for awhile, anyway). BeerFridgeKaren stuck with her favorite beef fajita enchiladas and I had one of my favorites, chicken mole enchiladas. We have finally caught up on our much-missed Mexican food and will be ready to start working on shedding a few of these extra pounds that pizza and beer tours can put on you. We will only be slowed down by our well-stocked beer fridge and the next urge to shovel chips & salsa!

Home Again, Home Again

After 100 days,  4790 miles, 7 states, 141 VW buses, 71 breweries and 2 new tow dolly rims, we made it back to our home in Friendswood. SummerRVMap2This last leg of our summer trip started out great. The sky was clear, the air was cool and we had a passenger for the ride home. Our daughter-in-law, Becky, had come up earlier in the week to help her daughter, our granddaughter, Kelsey, after her ankle surgery and now she needed to get back home so we got to enjoy her company for what should have been a five-hour trip. About half-way home, just past Centerville, I noticed in my side mirror that the driver-side tow dolly tire looked pretty low so I took the next exit to check it out. TowDollyFlatSure enough, what should have read 50 psi was only 22 pounds. I aired it back up but I was pretty sure I knew what was going on. Just like the other tow dolly tire back in Amarillo, the rim had failed and we were going to need a new one. While we continued south on Interstate 45, Karen found a tire shop in Madisonville, just a few more miles down the highway. They were able to pull the tire and confirm that, indeed, it was the rim that was leaking but they didn’t have a 14″ rim and, in fact, they were about to close as it was noon on Saturday. TowDollyInstallOur best option was to keep airing the tire up and continue on to Discount Tire in Huntsville, 26 more miles down the interstate. We stopped at the rest area just outside of Huntville and aired up the tire one more time before arriving at Discount Tire. It sure is handy having the built-in air compressor in the motor home! Karen had called ahead to make sure they had the rim in stock and to get us on their schedule in order to minimize our wait time. It wasn’t too long before they got the tire mounted on a new rim and we continued on our way. One of our goals with our summer excursions is to avoid the summer heat and we seem to have accomplished that with the temperature at 77 when we arrived home. Because of the great job Karen did emptying drawers, closets and the pantry and pre-packing all our stuff before we took off that morning, we got the motor home unloaded in record time and were soon enjoying being home again.

Rainy Day in Dallas/Fort Worth

RainyDay
We haven’t seen many rainy days in our travels this summer and judging by the water level in Lake Grapevine, neither have the folks in Dallas/Fort Worth. GooseSteppinBut the rain today is a welcome sight, not only for the much needed moisture but also the much cooler temperatures it has brought. The ducks and the geese seem particularly happy to have it.

This is our last day here as we will be heading home tomorrow. Our time here these past two weeks has been useful for acclimating us back to hot Texas RedHeadAmberweather as well as weaning us from a plethora of new breweries to try out. We did find a couple of good ones, though, and if they were open to the public other than on Saturday afternoons we could have visited a few more. We enjoyed the Red Head Amber Ale at NuttyBrewnettesUncle Buck’s Brewery & Steakhouse in Grapevine and as mentioned in the previous post we had a good time on Saturday afternoon at Martin House. It was a safe bet that we would like the Nutty Brewnette at BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse but neither of us found any reason to return to Big Horn Brewing (aka Humperdink’s in Dallas). It’s just a typical sport’s bar/restaurant with very mediocre beer even though they do brew it onsite.

We’ve managed to eat pretty well, too. There has been VealParmisana lot of good pizza at the Mellow Mushroom and Grimaldi’s Coal Brick-Oven Pizzeria here in Grapevine, and really good Italian with Robert and Karen at Terilli’s in Dallas. The Vitello Parmigiana at Cafe Italia, also in Grapevine, was outstanding – so much so that we had to go back a second time this week! Karen got to discover and I got a reminder of what a good Mexican restaurant Mercado Juarez is. It is a local chain and was one of our very favorites twenty years ago when I lived up here in Arlington. We thought we could wait until we got home to start revisiting our favorite BeefFajitaNachosPappasitosrestaurants there but when we realized that there was a Pappasito’s Cantina not far away in Dallas we couldn’t come up with a good reason to wait, especially since it is Jake’s and Peggy’s favorite, too. They do a happy dance when we bring them their leftover beef fajitas. Tonight we went with Mike & Cindy and new friends Randy & Judy to the Chef Point Cafe in Watauga. ChickenWafflesThis place started as a gas station because although the owner wanted to open a restaurant he couldn’t get a bank loan for a restaurant but he could for a gas station. The food here is excellent and the most interesting looking thing on the menu to me was the Chicken and Waffles. That’s what I ordered and that’s exactly what it was – really good fried chicken on top of really good waffles & syrup.

Martin House Brewing

FortWorthAlthough our summer trip is winding down we did manage to find one more brewery to check out. The brewery is Martin House Brewing Company and, interestingly, we found it in the city where I grew up, Fort Worth. Due to state laws that were only recently changed, the craft brewery industry in Texas is in its infancy. Until just a couple of months ago a brewery could only sell their beer through distributors, not onsite. To get around this, the standard way for a Texas brewery to maintain a following with the public has been a Saturday afternoon “open house” where they “sell” you a pint glass that includes 3 or 4 “free” samples. VanessaGaryKarenThis is the model we found at Martin House and so on Saturday Karen and I met up with my brother, Gary, and his wife, Vanessa, for “free” beer. In spite of the summer heat in the un-air-conditioned warehouse, the open bay doors on each end and the giant cooling fans made it quite comfortable inside.

Martin House has five beers in their current lineup:

  • Day Break – 4 Grain Breakfast Beer
  • River House – A Texas Saison
  • The Imperial Texan – Double Red Ale
  • SeptemberFest – Hoppy, Oatmeal Brown Ale
  • There Will Be Stout – The Original Pretzel Stout

Today, they didn’t have the Day Break on tap but between the four of us we were able to try them all. SeptFestPretzleStoutOur favorite, by far, was the SeptemberFest. In spite of the “Hoppy” label, I thought this beer was smooth and well-balanced. The double red ale was the real hoppy one at the upper limit of what I can enjoy as far as hops go. I really don’t get adding the pretzels to the stout. I think it would have been a much better stout without them. It was good to get a couple of those new beer can shaped glasses instead of the typical pint glass that we already have way too many of. MartinHouseSaturday An indication that Martin House is a new brewery was the relatively small crowd that has discovered them. The last Saturday brewery event I attended in Fort Worth was at Rahr & Sons Brewing. The crowds are so large there that in spite of the several tap locations throughout the warehouse once you get a beer you might as well get right back in line because your glass will be empty by the time you get back to the front. Maybe before that happens at Martin House more Texas craft breweries will figure out how to do tap rooms like we found in Colorado and Oregon, where they just sell you a pint of their beer.

The next day Karen and I went to Central Market in Southlake to pick up a couple of items. While there we met John Anderson, the head brewer at No Label Brewing in Katy (next door to Houston back home). He was there handing out samples of their beer to promote their brewery. I asked him when we might see Texas breweries get away from this “buy a pint glass” thing and start serving their beers in tap rooms. John told us they had recently started doing just that on Fridays (along with their Saturday thing). This is great news and it will give us a good reason for another blog post when we return home.

Grapevine, Texas

I remember when we were kids our dad would take my brothers and me out to Lake Grapevine in his old boat. He tried to fish while we would sometimes fish but mostly swim. SailingGrapevine1979At that time there was not much out there – no freeways, no DFW airport, no shopping malls, no RV parks – just a lake and a couple of marinas. Later, as a young adult, we would tow the sailboat behind our VW bus for a day sail and occasional camping. The airport was built by then but not much else. My how things can change in forty years!

NewRim2After getting a new rim for the tow dolly at Discount Tire in Amarillo first thing Monday morning, we made the otherwise uneventful six hour trip to Grapevine and arrived at our favorite Dallas-area RV park, The Vineyards Campground on Lake Grapevine. Once we had rested awhile and got cleaned up we made our way over to the Mellow Mushroom for some much-deserved beer and pizza. CalzoneThe pizza is okay but they have an excellent beer selection. We found a new one to try from Southern Star Brewing down in Conroe, their Buried Hatchet Stout. It is a rather large beer at over 8% ABV but they had it on a nitro tap which smoothed it out quite nicely and I had to have another when my calzone arrived.

The next morning brought a spectacular sunrise that pulled me away from trying to catch up at work long enough to get a few pictures. I might have missed it altogether if Jake and Peggy had decided to sleep in but they helped me out when I took them out.

WindshieldRepairI got a recommendation for a local auto glass guy from the CrackRepairNewmar owners group on the internet and since we would be stationary for several days I made arrangements for Auto Glass Russ to come on out and reseat our popped-out windshield. Russ arrived on schedule and not only did a thorough job of reseating the passenger side windshield but he was also able to repair the giant spider crack on the driver side.

We’ll be here for another week and a half, trying to visit as many friends and family as we can in that time and, hopefully, even find another brewery or two to check out. We’ll let you know.

Stuck in Amarillo, Again

Happily, our RV travels this summer have been free from breakdowns and mishaps, well except for that crack in the car’s driver side window that we CarCracksuspect was due to tree trimming in the Wellington KOA but that we didn’t notice until we left, and that missile or rock or whatever that hit the motor home outside of Boise that put the huge spider crack in the driver side windshield. MHCrackThat is until yesterday. Our RV site in Santa Fe was a bit unlevel, both fore and aft and side to side but that isn’t a problem because of the hydraulic leveling system that raises and/or lowers the ends and sides of the motor home to achieve level. However, when we were ready to leave and raised the jacks it apparently put a twist in the frame that caused the upper right corner of the passenger side windshieldDuctTape to pop out of its setting which we didn’t notice until we heard the odd wind noise as we picked up speed down the road. I could see the separation between the window and the gasket from the driver’s seat but it was small and I wasn’t concerned about the windshield falling out and was willing to wait until we stopped in Amarillo to deal with it which I did with a strip of duct tape. When we arrived at our new RV site we both noticed right away that one of the tires on the tow dolly was quite low. I hooked the hose up to the compressor and filled the tire to 40 lbs and hoped it would still have air in the morning.

Karen575In the meantime, it was time to go do what it is that we always stop overnight in Amarillo to do and that was to go to 575 Pizzeria to eat pizza. We only discovered this place because a couple of years ago we were stuck in Amarillo over a weekend due to a clogged fuel filter in the motor home. Now, we always stop in Amarillo for the night just so we can have their pizza – the best (says Karen) or the second best (says I) that we’ve had anywhere. PizzaMakerWe always try to get there early so we don’t have to wait for a table and we were immediately seated at what we now consider to be “our table” since it’s the same one we had last time. It wasn’t long after we ordered our pizzas that one of the managers recognized us and came over to chat. 575PizzaThat’s pretty amazing since we only come here twice a year! The pizzas arrived and there was a short discussion between us about which is better, 575 or Fired Up in Durango. The issue remains unresolved because we would rather eat it than talk about it and we will continue to go to both every chance we get.

We woke up early this morning, anticipating a quick departure for Dallas/Fort Worth, but I knew that would be dependent on the condition of the tow dolly tire which was … flat. Oh well, I figured on a delay of a couple of hours as I called Coach Net, our roadside assistance plan. They actually got someone out pretty quick but unfortunately, the diagnosis was not a bad tire but a bad rim! FlatTireToday, being Sunday, there is nobody open for business in Amarillo that has a 14″ rim – and we tried everyone from Firestone to Walmart to El Papa Wheel and Tire. Resigned to the fact that we’d have to wait until Monday to find a new rim I went to the RV park office and paid for another night as Karen called the RV park in Grapevine to move our reservation back a day. We are optimistic that we’ll be back on the road tomorrow and that we might even discover another reason to stop in Amarillo for the night.

Santa Fe

Although Santa Fe, New Mexico, has been a good place to stop for a few nights on our way to or from somewhere else, we have determined that it is also a great destination. At 7000 feet elevation it has that mild, high-desert climate (think cool and dry) with sunny days and starry nights. BlueCornStoutsWe have also discovered that there are a lot of good choices when looking for something good to eat and, wouldn’t you know it, some of those places happen to brew beer. One such place is Blue Corn Cafe & Brewery. We discovered it when we were here last year and were anxious to return, remembering that both the chips & salsa and the oatmeal stout were very good. It was good to find out nothing had changed in that regard. PupusasThe next day also had us returning to a previously discovered spot, the Tune Up Cafe. It was Labor Day and lunchtime so they were very busy but when our pupusas finally arrived we both agreed it was worth the wait. We need to come back and stay longer so we’ll have time to eat here again and again and try something else. SecondStreetAmbersWith food in our stomachs it was time to visit another of Santa Fe’s five breweries so we headed over to Second Street Brewery, on Second Street. They have two locations and last year we went to the other one at The Railyard. We both had the amber ale which was good enough but one was enough (or in Karen’s case half was enough).

It was a couple of days later before we MarbleStoutRedventured out again and this trip took us downtown to the Plaza and the Marble Brewery Taproom. We really enjoyed sitting on their balcony overlooking the Plaza with Karen’s oatmeal stout and my red ale. It was enjoyable enough to have another round of oatmeal stouts but then it was time to try some place new. Karen’s online search found The Pantry Restaurant. It is a small place but highly rated. PantryChipsSalsaWe were off to a great start with their chips & salsa – different than our favorite salsa at home but oh, so good! This day their special was the carnitas and that’s what I ordered. Although the taste was very good, I’m afraid the reason they were the “special” is because they were left over from lunch – very dry. PantryBrisketTacosHowever, the shredded brisket tacos that Karen had were extremely good. In fact, they were so good that I’m afraid this is going to be another one of those places we’ll have to go to again and again, every time we’re anywhere near Santa Fe.

One of the highlights from last year was the burger at Bobcat Bite and we were looking forward to doing it again. We were disappointed to find that it had been closed for a couple of months but our smiles returned when we learned that it had reopened as the Santa Fe Bite just a couple of weeks ago at a new, downtown location. After feeding the parking meter full of nickels and dimes we walked the few blocks to the restaurant and waited for our turn at a table which finally came after I returned to the car to add more dimes to the meter. The huge 10-ounce burger with bacon and cheese (and in Karen’s case, green chiles) was as big and as good and as filling as we remembered but there is no photo due to an uncooperative camera and an impatient photographer (me).

DuelDarkRyderOur time here wasn’t only about revisiting favorite spots from last year. We also discovered new favorites, such as Duel Brewing, the newest brewery in Santa Fe. They’ve only been open for six weeks and they specialize in Belgian-style ales. When we arrived we were the only customers there but that gave us all the better opportunity to talk with Chris, the bartender. DuelBartenderChris2He let us know they were out of their Bad Amber ale and after a quick look at the beer menu and a sample taste, we both chose the Dark Ryder, a Belgian dark strong ale. We were admiring the bar tops, tables and all the art on the walls and Chris let us know that they were all done by Trent, the owner. DuelPhotoShootVery impressive, as was the beer. Further scrutiny of the menu revealed another beer we had to try, the Grunewald – Brewer’s Special Release, a Belgian-style imperial porter. This is a really big beer so we decided to share a pint. All of the alcohol taste was up front and quickly gave way to the chocolate and dark fruity notes in this superb ale. DualTrentMollieChrisIt was a short time later that a reporter and a photographer from Local iQ magazine came in, apparently to do a feature in an upcoming issue. We had a good time interacting with them and watching them do their work. This also brought Trent out and gave us a chance to talk with him about his concept, his beer, his tap room and his art. We had a great time here and look forward to coming back and watching them grow.

SantaFeBrewingJavaStoutAfter work on our last day in Santa Fe we did go back to The Pantry for another meal of brisket tacos, plus we got a quart jar filled with their salsa. SantaFeBrewingAs full as we both were we still needed to make a stop at the remaining brewery in town, Santa Fe Brewing Company. There were more than a few good choices from their current lineup but after a couple of tastes we both settled on their Java Stout. We asked who owned the VW bus that was parked outside and one of the guys working in the brewery was pointed out. In a little bit he came up front and we were able to talk buses for awhile. Their Java Stout was very good indeed and we contemplated having another but we were already too full and ready to go home and assume the position (think recliners).
