Interstate 84

Well, we made it to Salt Lake City and got squeezed into our spot at the Mountain Shadows RV Park in Draper, Utah. But we left in such a rush for Los Cucos that we forgot to take a camera or even a phone so there are no photos of our happy reunion with great Tex-Mex. Instead, we’ll show you some examples of the interesting things we saw along the way, thanks to Karen’s drive-by shooting.

Boise

Maybe it’s because we’ve only over-nighted here a couple of times or maybe it’s because we had just left beautiful Bend, Oregon, and it’s an unfair comparison, but we are less than impressed with Boise. It could also be that there are few RV park options here and the one we took is hot, dusty and not well-maintained. Pizzalchik2Pizzalchik1However, our goal in Boise was to eat the pizza at Pizzalchik, a place that we’ve seen on Food Network a couple of times including Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. This restaurant could have been anywhere in Boise but the neatest thing about our RV park was that it was less than one mile away. Being hot, tired and hungry that helped a lot! The pizza was very good but got no help from the crust which was a little too thick and heavy for our tastes, but the sauce and the cheese made up for that extremely well.

There are several brew pubs in town and we decided if there was one close by we’d try it out, otherwise we were done for the day. A quick check on Google maps found Sockeye Grill & Brewery 2.5 miles away and since it was in the opposite direction from the RV park, that put it only 1.5 miles from home – perfect! SockeyeSampleSockeyeBrewingPorterWe sampled their Powerhouse Porter and since everything else was either too light or too hoppy it was an easy choice.

Next stop is back to Sandy, Utah, and Los Cucos – only six hours away!

Depoe Bay to Florence

RogueBrewingThe Labor Day weekend was upon us and we had to leave our beach-front RV park and head on down the coast to our new space at the Port of Newport Marina & RV Park. The city of Newport is all about seafood and we took advantage of our first opportunity for something to eat at Saffron Salmon. SaffronSalmonHowever, since it was just a little before 4:00pm and they didn’t open until 5 we decided to spend that hour across the street at Rogue Ales Public House, being that the Rogue brewery is located right here in Newport. The grilled Chinook salmon we both had at Saffron was very good – we just wish there had been more of it.

NewTiresThe first thing on our agenda the next morning was to drive back over the bridge with the motor home to Les Schwab Tire Center to get the two new tires we had ordered to replace the used tire that replaced our flat the week before. We also replaced it’s outside companion since it could have been damaged while supporting the entire weight of that axle end. Thirteen-hundred and eighty dollars later (yep, for two tires) we were back at our marina/RV park and ready to start the fun part of the day. We got a lot of good information about the area from Clay, our most excellent park host. He had come over the day we arrived and told us about the best places to eat, some of the must-see places along the coast and the best places to see whales. NewportFarmersMarketInstead of stopping at the bakery on our way to Depoe Bay, we came across the Newport Farmers Market where we picked up some yummy baked goods and a loaf of sourdough multi-grain bread. Karen used some of it to make french toast the next day which was quite good!

GrayWhaleIt was along the Otter Crest Loop scenic drive where Karen spotted the first of the many whales we would see this day. According to Clay, these gray whales live here year-round due to the abundant food supply. Yaquina-Head-LighthouseThe Yaquina Head Lighthouse is the tallest one on the Oregon coast and we saw even more whales here.

The next day we drove south along the coast, through Yachats, where we found another farmers market, to Florence, where we had a grilled salmon lunch at a sidewalk table at the Bridgewater Restaurant. HecetaHeadBridgeWe saw more of the incredibly scenic coast, more whales, more Conde McCullough bridges and just a little bit of the great sand dunes south of Florence. We’re sure it is a very different place here during the winter storms and we’d like to come back and see that drama someday.

Rockaway Beach to Newport

DrivingCoastThis is what we came to the Oregon coast for. We’ve driven along the coast, visited all three capes on the Three Cape Scenic Drive, CapeLookouthiked to Munson Creek Falls (the tallest waterfall on the Oregon coast), sampled a couple of local MunsonCreekWaterfallbreweries in Pacific City and Lincoln City, taken walks on the beach right out our door and even came upon a classic car show.BeachRV  But most of all, we’ve enjoyed just sitting at home and looking at this fabulous view out the front window!

Tillamook / Oceanside

TireChangeWe only had a 30-minute drive down Hwy 101 to our next RV park in Rockaway Beach so we weren’t in any hurry to leave so as not to arrive too early. Things really slowed way down after I checked the air in the tires and discovered no air in the passenger rear inside tire. Huge problem! After triple-checking again with three different gauges, I called Coach Net (like AAA for RVs) and made arrangements for a new tire. Luckily, there is a Les Schwab tire center just up the road in Seaside and they had a used tire our size in stock and would SunsetBeachbe there at 3pm (which turned into 4pm) but they did show up and changed the tire and we were finally on our way.

Our new park is right on the beach and we arrived in plenty of time to enjoy a beautiful, and chilly, sunset.

Taking a third vacation day this week, we drove down to Tillamook and over to OceansideRoseanasCafeView to see the sights and have lunch at Roseana’s Cafe. The food was good although it didn’t exactly match up to the rave reviews we saw on Yelp, but the view of the beach and cliffs and rocks from our table on this beautiful day sure made it worthwhile.
CapeMearesLighthouseAfter lunch we continued on the Three Capes Scenic Drive to Cape Meares State Park. Here we made a couple of short hikes to see the Cape Meares Lighthouse and the famous Octopus Tree. Looks like we’ll have two more capes to drive on another day.

We got back to Tillamook and visited the Tillamook Cheese factory. They have a huge parking lot and visitors center to accommodate the huge crowds. Frankly, I do not understand the draw. It is not that exciting. We did get to sample their cheeses and buy their ice cream. TillamookBabyLoafI guess most people just like crowds. I don’t get it. The highlight of the visit was seeing their semi-fake VW bus mascot, Baby Loaf.

Astoria

Welcome to Astoria, Oregon!WelcomeAstoria We made the short drive up from Cannon Beach not sure of what we would find there. What we found was a quaint and historic town (the oldest settlement in America west of the Rockies) that can’t be done in a single day. We started with looking for something to eat and discovered the Bowpicker Fish & Chips food “cart”. BowPickerAstoriaFish & chips is the only item on the menu and they do it right. All the fish is albacore tuna, deep-fried and delicious! Even the french fries are cooked to perfection. The long line moved slow but was well worth the wait.
FortGeorgeBreweryWe only had to move the car 2 blocks to find the Fort George Brewery and Public House. I had the Nut Red Ale and Karen had the Cavatica Stout which was really, really good. It’s amazing to be able to sit outside in the direct sun and feel cool … in the middle of August! DanishMaidAfter the beer we walked around town a little bit and came across this place: Danish Maid Bakery. Of course everything looked good but just how good was it? Well, I have to admit that we’d already indulged on a couple of apple fritters at the Cannon Beach bakery the last couple of days which were very good but the one Karen had here could be the best ever!
AstoriaBrewingWe walked back to the car and drove down near the waterfront to find the Astoria Brewing Company and Wet Dog Cafe. We again sat outside with a view of the river and the Astoria Riverfront Trolley. The beer list looked impressive but the waitress informed us that it had been a busy weekend and they were out of everything except five beers. Fortunately, one of those five was their Poopdeck Porter. Not being able to get those apple fritters out of our head, and being only a couple of blocks away, we walked back to Danish Maid and got six apple fitters (they freeze well) for $2.85 – ridiculous but true!
AstoriaColumnNext we drove up Coxcomb Hill to see the views of the river and ocean from high above the town. We got directions from a local who saw us taking pictures to the Astoria Column which is located at the highest point on the hill. It was completed in 1926 to commemorate westward expansion. It is 125 feet tall and there are 164 spiral staircase steps to reach the top. I can tell you it’s a lot easier going down but the 360 degree views from the top are amazing and worth the climb.

Good Eats

Oregon sure has it’s share of great places to eat and the number of opportunities for another new craft beer is staggering. We wanted to try out Full Sail Brewing and the pizza at Double Mountain Brew Pub in Hood River. DblMtPizzaThe pizza was as good as it gets but the beer was a bit lacking. So on to Full Sail where they have a great view of the Columbia River Gorge but the brew was just okay. We knew we had an ace in the hole at Everybody’s Brewing across the river in White Salmon but we weren’t ready to play that card yet so we decided to take the scenic drive on the Hood River County Fruit Loop. PearsThere are tons of orchards, vineyards and farms here in the largest pear-growing region in the country, all in the shadow of the incredibly scenic Mount Hood. We stopped at one fruit stand and bought some peaches that Karen turned into a most-wonderful cobbler yesterday! MountAdamsAnother discovery we made on this drive is the existence of another snow-capped mountain – Mount Adams. Ah-ha, that’s why it’s called Double Mountain. As many times as we’ve driven through the Gorge we never saw Mount Adams because it’s obscured from the interstate.

We must be getting just a little homesick because the next day we took a big risk and went to Podnah’s Pit Barbecue in Portland. To add to the risk we ordered chips and salsa to start. ChipsSalsaWe figured out what took so long once they arrived – they cook the chips to order! The salsa isn’t exactly what we get at home but it was very good and we could have eaten a lot more of it if not for the brisket, ribs and hot links still to come! Neither of us cared much for the sausage and think they could use some help with their sauce but the brisket and ribs were smokey and delicious and didn’t need any ol’ sauce!

Laurelwood Public House & Brewery could easily qualify for favorite pub status if we stayed here long enough to run out of new places to try. LaurelwoodIt was hard to choose among the four samples we had; the red, brown, porter and stout. Not only that, but their happy hour menu had fish tacos in corn tortillas – nobody outside of Texas does that (it seems) and that’s the only way we want them! We shared one order of two tacos since this place is right next to Der Rheinlander where we wanted another shot at the wiener schnitzel that we enjoyed there last year. The schnitzel was good but the experience would have been better if our waiter was as attentive as he was enthusiastic.

CreamCornSoupOne of the many cookbooks in Karen’s collection is this one, Mother’s Best: Comfort Food That Takes You Home Again. The author’s restaurant is Mother’s Bistro in downtown Portland so we had to go there. We got off to a great start with a parking space right in front of their door. Then things improved when the ladies seated next to us recommended the cream of corn soup. Wow, that was good! ChickenDumplinsKaren ordered the chicken and dumplings because she knows that recipe is in her book and I ordered the macaroni and cheese du jour – proscuitto, roasted garlic and parmesan. Mine was good but Karen’s was better. Since she has the recipe she’s going to have to make it at home!

Caitlyn, Lane & Charlene

CaitlynLaneSince we’ve decided to skip Seattle this time, due to the lack of available space at a decent RV park, we made the two-hour drive from Portland to Dupont, Washington, for a much-too-quick visit with granddaughter Caitlyn and her precious and adorable little ones, Lane and Charlene. Well, it would have been only two hours if not for the accident on Interstate 5 just four miles from our exit. CharleneLaneNo problem even if it had taken twice that long – the reward at the end of the drive was well worth it! We met at a restaurant that serves mediocre pizza (what a waste of a really neat wood-fired oven) and since that time went by way too fast we figured we had to at least try to get on base (Fort Lewis) and extend our visit. DavidCharleneAfter jumping through a few bureaucratic hoops we managed to get a pass and had Elmo on the tube for Lane shortly thereafter. What happened next was pretty scary but it could have been a lot worse. In Karen’s own words “…Went to their house and got bit by their ugly big dog! Terrifying! He nipped at my hip first as Caitlyn was showing me Lane’s room, then he attacked my heel and wouldn’t let go. He was so strong he was able to pull me three or so feet down the hall! David was holding the baby so he wasn’t able to help. Caitlyn had to struggle to get the dog to let go of my heel. …”. Caitlyn had already decided that having the dog was a mistake and was trying to find him another home. Now she just wants him out of hers. Smart girl!
